Thursday, November 19th 2009:Day 1

The King Salmon Eggs arrived today at 2:30pm. The eggs are approximately one month old, they are a light orange color with a black speck (this is the eye). There were 200 eggs in all at the start of transporting. By 3:30pm FIVE eggs had turned white (white eggs signify that the eggs have died). FOUR of the FIVE died in transport on the way to the school, the other ONE died during the one hour acclimating process (2:30pm-3:30pm). All dead eggs were removed immediately to prevent the water from going bad. By the end of the day there were 195 eggs remaining. This news sort of frightened me at first...I had already lost 5 eggs and we only had them for a couple hours. In reality though, fish eggs are very fragile and weak when they are young (like any other newborn or developing baby animal). During the first stages of their lives they are most susceptible to sickness and disease, and small disturbances can easily stress them out and cause them to die. The two hour drive and the acclimating process would both be very stressful experiences for anything so little, so it was actually surprising that we only had lost FIVE.
