Monday, November 30th 2009: Day 12

Temperature: 48.5 F degrees
Amount of Stress Zyme Added: 10 ml
Amount of H2O exchanged: 3gal-3gal
Total number of eggs hatched: 1
Today I exchanged
3 gallons of distilled water with 3 gallons of aquarium water (with 10 ml of stress zyme added to it: we add stress zyme to the water to reduce and prevent sludge build-up. It also helps to lower ammonium and nitrite levels and prevents the fish from becoming poisoned by these toxins. Another benefit that results from stress zyme is an increase in oxygen levels and a healthier pH. All these improvements are made by the bacteria in the stress zyme). I also noticed that the eggs are beginning to hatch already! The first egg completely hatched at 11:00 am. When I walked in to check on them, he flipped his tail a coupled times and the remainder of his egg shell was tossed away. He has a clear tail, big black eyes, and a huge orange food pouch on his belly. I counted 18 dark orange/yellow eggs today, I think they are all preparing to hatch. There were 3 really bright yellow ones, one appears to be white but I'm not totally sure yet if they are hatching or if they are dead, so I'll wait a couple of days and see what happens. There are also three eggs partially hatched, they have a lump coming out of one side, it's pretty neat!. One of these eggs is gray/white in color while the other two are orange. The gray/white one has a fluffy looking material coming out of it, it reminds me of tiny slivers of broken styrofoam. When I looked in the aquarium at 11:00am there were white chunks all over. I wonder if it comes out of an egg when it hatches. It could have been from the already hatched salmon eggs. My other prediction is that it is coming from the whitish eggs; maybe they were getting ready to hatch and they died halfway through the hatching process, since they were partially hatched they may have been able to release some of their white stuff. I decided not to touch anything today except for remove the clear, empty shell from the lone hatchling. We'll see how things play out, hopefully everyone is alright.
In this photo you can see the orange eggs that had changed colors, I counted about 18 of them. if you look closely you can see a white chunk of something towards the upper middle area of the picture, you can also see the white egg, and if you look in the lower right hand corner the first hatchling can also be seen.

In the other photo you can see a more close up view of the first sac fry to hatch, he had a huge orange pouch on his belly. This is his food sac from his egg, it is a part of his body, basically a huge belly. He will live off of this sac for approximately one month before he starts to eat real food.
