Amount of Stress Zyme added: 10 mL
Amount of H2O exchanged: 3 gallon-3 gallon
Total number of eggs hatched: about 80
Amount of eggs removed: 0
I checked the salmon today and was very surprised to see that many of the sac fries had hatched. One corner of the hatching box had a big pile of empty egg shells in it. I set to work removing them. Three of the eggs have white stuff coming out of them along with the fishes heads. One of the librarians (who is very interested in watching the salmon develop and has generously offered to check on the fish over weekends when it's difficult for me to get to the school to check up on them) suggested to me that this could be how the eggs hatch; they might lose the white stuff from their eggs when they hatch. I'm going to wait and see if she's right. It does make sense to me! I counted at least 70 sac fries! This means that over one third of the eggs have hatched already! In addition to cleaning up the hatchery box, I also did a water change today of three gallons of water for three gallons of distilled water with 10 mL of stress zyme added. All the new hatchlings are identical to the first, and they all look healthy and strong! Removed 10 eggs shells after school at 3:30 pm.
In this photo you can see that approximately 70 of the fish have hatched out now. If you look in the upper right hand corner there is a huge pile of empty shells from the hatched fish eggs. You can also see a few white chunks in the water and a couple of partially hatched fish eggs.
Here is another photo of the fish today. This photo was taken after I removed the egg shells. You can still see a few white chunks in this photo though.
Here is another picture of the fish on December 7th after removing the white stuff.
Here's a closer view of some of the sac fries, just to give you a better look.
