Lost two fish today, there are about seven more weak ones today as well. I changed three gallons of the water and added stress zyme. Water tested and found that nitrite is high, 0.25ppm (mg/L). It is important that I try and get this nitrite level to go down soon as it could become a contributing factor to salmon deaths. I unplugged the filter and removed the spongy filter from the aquarium to clean it then fastened it back on. I removed all of the particles of left over food and waste from the bottom of the aquarium and I checked the water quality multiple times, just to make sure that I wasn't missing something, everything came up normal every time but the nitrite was always the same. I calculated our population today and found that we have 133 fish remaining in our tank. We have lost 67 in total and our current survival rate is 66.5%, our death rate is 33.5%. The fish received a feeding at 10:30am, 3:30pm, and 6:30pm. The strong fish are feeding aggressively and taking every bite of food they can. I need to bring in some milk jugs for Monday to distill water for the frequent water changes coming up. I currently have three gallons of tap water distilling for a good water change on Monday but I am nervous that the nitrite level may rise again over the weekend, so tomorrow (Saturday) the librarian is planning on opening the doors for me so that I can get in to feed them and check that everything is still alright. My teacher was gone today so this made it a little more difficult for me, because I'm not sure if there is something more that I can do for them that I'm unaware of. They all seem to be pretty healthy though, so maybe I'm overreacting a little bit, but I want to make sure that they have a safe living environment non-the-less.
