Big water change today, cleaned bottom of the tank and filter, noticed that the net filter around the cooler pipe has been accumulating a lot of food and waste material. This most likely is a big reason why the nitrite level is so high. I removed this filter and rinsed it out, it was absolutely filthy and disgusting! I'm glad I noticed this because now I at least have some sort of explanation as to why the nitrite levels keep increasing. The net was a yellowish color when I pulled it out, but after I cleaned it it was a really clean white. I cannot believe I did not notice it before! Now I know to pay attention to this more often, keeping both filters clean is a big step to keeping the entire tank clean! I'm really curious to see how far the nitrite drops over the weekend, could it be all the way back to normal already? I suppose it could be possible! I'll check our nitrite levels on Monday and see.
